11-17-12: Thyroid Disease

 

The November 17th show discussed thyroid disease in dogs and cats. Our expert guest was board-certified internal medicine specialist Dr. Danielle Bayliss from the Memphis Veterinary Specialists in Memphis, Tennessee. Low thyroid is the most common endocrine problem in dogs and causes lethargy, weight gain, and skin issues. Meanwhile, cats often develop an elevated thyroid level, causing a ravenous appetite, weight loss, and secondary cardiac disease. Dr. Bayliss discussed treatments and prognosis for these diseases.
