1-5-13: Intervertebral Disk disease

Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) is the most common spinal-cord condition in dogs. It is a very painful disease that can progress to paralysis. Certain breeds, such as dachshunds and Bassett hounds, are predisposed  to develop this condition, but it can affect any pet. Our expert guest was Dr. Dan Guastella, surgical specialist from Chandler, Arizona. Dr. Guastella educated our listeners about the different types of IVDD and the common locations this disease affects. He also discussed both the medical and surgical management of the disease and any preventative steps pet owners can take to minimize its occurrence.
